Washington Academy Wetland Preserved

Wherever you go in Downeast Maine, you are in a salmon watershed. Each place provides an opportunity to make a difference for salmon conservation, and that is why DSF was excited to prepare an easement for a wetland property owned by Washington Academy (WA). Drawing on their close proximity to EMARC, the students and faculty of this East Machias high school have been incredibly supportive of DSF efforts. So when WA sought to conserve a wetland habitat to mitigate environmental impacts of their expanding campus, it was not surprising to hear that students would be directly involved. Although our DSF land trust will hold the conservation easement, WA students have already conducted initial boundary surveys and gathered baseline data for the property as a start to their stewardship. Oddly enough, the former dam which DSF removed once flooded this wetland! This 32 acre property, just up-stream from EMARC, will now provide an open space and outdoor classroom for WA to study wetland functions. May the watershed connections
continue!
