Machias: Thursday, June 11th @ 7pm. Meet @ old Rite-Aid building, Rt. 1 (next to new Rite-Aid)
Pembroke: Friday, June 12th @ 7 pm. Meet at intersection of Rt.1 and Leighton Pt Rd. (next to Morgan’s store (Irving)
The Downeast Salmon Federation is looking for volunteers to help in an effort to survey Rainbow Smelt populations in Downeast Maine. Volunteer training sessions will be held in Machias on June 11th at the old Rite-Aid building across from Hannaford, and in Pembroke on June 12th at the intersection of Rt. 1 and the Leighton Pt. Road. DSF is in their third year of a massive data collection effort to learn more about smelt populations in this region, and they need your help! The information volunteers collect will be used to help DSF, Department of Marine Resources, and others update their data and inform regulators.
Come join DSF staff at either of these trainings to learn more about smelt and their life cycle, to learn how you can help, and to share your knowledge of your local streams and rivers. The help of volunteers is needed to document healthy smelt runs so that this culturally important, native fishery will continue to be available to you, your family, and friends.
