Fisheries Education Specialist

Position Announcement

Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries (http://www.coastalfisheries.org), a 15-year old non-profit organization located in Stonington, Maine seeks a Fisheries Education Specialist to join our team. The Education Specialist is responsible for overseeing formal and informal educational programming for MCCF.

Eastern Maine Skippers Program
This position serves as the primary liaison for the Eastern Maine Skippers Program (EMSP), connecting fisheries issues, fishermen, fishing community members, and other fisheries experts with both the curriculum and the teaching of EMSP. EMSP is a fisheries-education program that works with over 100 students in eight Maine high schools. The Fisheries Education Specialist will be the lead representative of MCCF in the organizational developments of EMSP, serving on the steering committee and helping to guide the evolution of the program. The Specialist will be responsible for hands-on implementation of the program, staying current on fisheries issues, developing relationships with members of the marine science and regulatory sectors, and building and maintaining relationships with each of the communities in a way that directly supports the implementation of EMSP.

Discovery Wharf
This position oversees educational programming at MCCF’s office in Stonington, Maine, including Discovery Wharf, an on-sight fisheries education center that is open to the public during the summer season. The Specialist will be responsible for overseeing the staffing for Discovery Wharf, creating fisheries exhibits, and educating the public on MCCF’s programs.

Other
There are opportunities to further connect MCCF programming in K-12 settings, as well as coastal communities. The Education Specialist will be based in Stonington and work alongside the Communications, Program, and Administrative teams on educational programming. A relevant Bachelor’s degree and knowledge of fisheries, marine issues and/or social science is required. Experience in formal K-12 education is desirable.
